Ozone is an unstable gas made up of 3 parts oxygen instead of the 2 parts we normally refer to as the air we breathe.  Ozone is that wonderful smell in the air right after a thunderstorm. As a gas ozone is blue. It is this blue ozone in the atmosphere that causes the sky to be blue. At altitudes from 25-30 km ozone is created by a portion of the sun's ultraviolet spectrum.  Ozone is produced constantly in the upper atmosphere as long as the sun is shining, and since ozone is heavier than air, it begins to fall earthward. As it falls, it combines with any pollutant it contacts, cleaning the air -- nature's wonderful self-cleaning system. If ozone contacts water vapor as it falls, it forms hydrogen peroxide, a component of rainwater, and the reason why rainwater causes plants to grow better than irrigation.

Ozone is also created by lightning, and the amount produced in an average storm is often triple the allowable limit of .015 PPM as set by the US EPA. This ozone is what gives the air the wonderful fresh smell after a rain, and is of the highest benefit to anyone fortunate enough to be breathing it. Ozone is also created by waterfalls and crashing surf, which accounts for the energetic feeling and calm experienced near these sites. Ozone is a marvel of nature. This unstable gas attacks micro-organisms that create odor such as bacteria, spores and other oxygen bearing hosts effectively eliminating them through a process called oxidation. Ozone kills the source that produces the odor.

Catatumbo, the greatest single generator of ozone on the planet
The mysterious “Relámpago del Catatumbo” (Catatumbo lightning) is a unique natural phenomenon in the world. Located on the mouth of the Catatumbo river at Lake Maracaibo (Venezuela), the phenomenon is a cloud-to-cloud lightning that forms a voltage arc more than five kilometer high during 140 to 160 nights a year, 10 hours a night, and as many as 280 times an hour.

This almost permanent storm occurs over the marshlands where the Catatumbo River feeds into Lake Maracaibo and it is considered the greatest single generator of ozone on the planet. Judging the intensity of the cloud-to-cloud discharge and great frequency, the area sees an estimated 1,176,000 electrical discharges per year with an intensity of up to 400,000 amperes, and visible up to 400 km away. This is the reason why the storm is also known as the Maracaibo Beacon as light has been used for navigation by ships for ages.
